Three steps, then mostly leave it alone

1. Pick the vessel. A geometric brass frame for an architectural look, or a glass globe on tung wood for something softer.

2. Add the plant. An air plant needs no soil at all: rest it on a bed of pebbles or sand. A small succulent wants a shallow layer of grit.

3. Give it light, occasionally water. Bright, indirect light near a window suits both. Mist an air plant every week or two; water a succulent when you remember. That really is the routine.

Which plant should I start with?

Do they need watering at a desk?

Barely. Air plants want a mist every week or two, or an occasional short soak at the kitchen sink. Succulents want water only when their soil is bone dry. Neither will punish a busy fortnight.

Is there enough light in an office?

A desk near a window with bright, indirect light suits air plants and succulents well. For a darker corner, style the terrarium with moss, pebbles and sand instead: it still brings the calm without needing the sun.

Are plants included?
