To clean molten glass on wood, wipe the glass with a soft, damp cloth and a drop of mild washing-up liquid, then dry it straight away and gently buff the wood with a barely damp cloth. Keep the piece away from soaking, dishwashers and sudden temperature changes, and your hand-blown recycled glass and reclaimed gamal wood will stay beautiful for years.
Each piece pairs hand-blown recycled glass with reclaimed Balinese gamal wood. Because these are two very different natural materials fused together, a little gentle care goes a long way.
How to clean molten glass on wood
The glass surface is easy to look after. Treat it kindly and avoid harsh chemicals or abrasive scourers.
- Dampen a soft, lint-free cloth with lukewarm water and a small drop of mild washing-up liquid.
- Wipe the glass in gentle, circular motions to lift dust, fingerprints and light residue.
- Rinse the cloth, wring it well, then wipe again to remove any soapy film.
- Dry the glass immediately with a clean, dry cloth to keep it clear and streak-free.
Avoid bleach, solvents, glass sprays containing ammonia, and scouring pads, as these can dull the surface over time.
Caring for the reclaimed wood base
The gamal wood base is porous and natural, so it should never be left wet or submerged.
- Use only a barely damp cloth on the wood, then dry it at once.
- Wipe up spills promptly so moisture does not soak in.
- Once or twice a year, you can nourish the wood with a little food-safe or furniture wood oil, applied sparingly with a soft cloth.
- Keep the base out of standing water and away from radiators or damp windowsills.
Water use
A damp cloth is fine, but soaking is not. Never immerse the piece in water and never put it in the dishwasher. Prolonged moisture can cause the reclaimed wood to swell, crack or discolour.
Avoiding temperature extremes
Glass fused to wood does not respond well to sudden heat or cold. To protect the bond between the two materials:
- Do not pour boiling water or place hot pans directly onto the piece.
- Keep it away from ovens, hobs, open flames and direct, prolonged sunlight.
- Avoid moving a piece straight from a cold room into a hot one.
Dusting and everyday handling
- Dust regularly with a soft, dry cloth to keep the glass bright.
- Lift each piece by supporting the wooden base, not by gripping the glass rim.
- Place pieces on a stable, level surface away from edges.
- Use as decorative homeware: ideal for dry items, keys or jewellery rather than wet food or liquids.
Frequently asked questions
Can I put molten glass on wood in the dishwasher?
No. The heat, water and detergents will damage the reclaimed wood and can weaken the bond between the wood and glass. Always hand-clean instead.
Is molten glass on wood food safe?
Our pieces are designed as decorative homeware, such as molten glass bowls and tableware, rather than tableware for direct food contact. Use them for dry items and keep food and liquids out of direct, prolonged contact with the surfaces.
How do I remove water marks from the glass?
Buff gently with a soft, dry microfibre cloth. For stubborn marks, use a barely damp cloth with a little mild washing-up liquid, then dry straight away.
How often should I oil the wood base?
Once or twice a year is plenty. A light application of food-safe or furniture wood oil keeps the reclaimed gamal wood looking rich and healthy.
