About Molten Root

Molten Root makes molten glass on wood homeware: hand-blown recycled glass fused over reclaimed Balinese gamal wood, so every piece pairs the depth of real glass with the warmth of natural timber. Each one is shaped by hand, which means no two are ever quite the same.

Where molten glass meets wood

The idea behind Molten Root is simple. Take recycled glass, heat it until it flows, and let it settle into a slab of reclaimed wood so the two materials meet on their own terms. As the molten glass cools against the grain, it pools, ripples and finds its own edges. The result is a surface you want to run your hand across: smooth, glassy and full of light, sitting on timber that has already lived a life.

We work with two main material stories:

  • Recycled glass on gamal wood: hand-blown recycled glass fused onto reclaimed Balinese gamal, a fast-growing timber long used across the island.
  • Recycled beer-bottle glass on wood: glass melted down from used bottles, giving each piece its characterful green and amber tones.

The artisans behind every piece

Our work is made in Bali by skilled glass and woodworking artisans who have spent years learning to read how molten glass behaves. Glass-blowing is unforgiving: timing, heat and instinct decide whether a piece holds together or not. Fusing that glass to wood adds another layer of craft, because the two materials expand and cool at different rates.

Every bowl, board and dish is finished by hand. That human touch is why the pieces feel considered rather than mass-produced, and why small variations in colour, bubbles and edges are part of the character, not a fault.

A sustainable approach, honestly told

Sustainability sits at the heart of what we do, and we prefer to be specific about it rather than vague:

  • Recycled glass. The glass we use is recycled, including glass reclaimed from used beer bottles, giving discarded material a second life.
  • Reclaimed wood. Our gamal wood is reclaimed, putting timber to use that might otherwise go to waste.
  • Made to last. These are objects designed to be kept, passed on and used for years, the opposite of throwaway decor.

One of a kind, by nature

Because molten glass on wood is shaped by hand and by heat, no two Molten Root pieces are identical. The way the glass settles, the depth of colour and the markings in the wood are unique to each one. When you choose a piece, you are choosing an original.

Why Molten Root exists

We started Molten Root because we wanted homeware that felt alive: natural materials, real craft and a clear conscience about where things come from. Beautiful objects should not cost the earth, and they should carry the marks of the hands that made them. That belief shapes every piece we sell.

Frequently asked questions

What is molten glass on wood?

Molten glass on wood is homeware made by fusing hand-blown recycled glass onto a base of reclaimed wood. The glass is heated until it flows, then settles and cools against the timber to form a smooth, glassy surface with natural ripples.

Is the glass really recycled?

Yes. We use recycled glass, including glass reclaimed from used beer bottles, which gives many pieces their distinctive green and amber tones.

What kind of wood does Molten Root use?

We use reclaimed Balinese gamal wood, a fast-growing timber, so the wood element of each piece makes use of reclaimed material.

Are all Molten Root pieces unique?

Yes. Because every piece is hand-made and shaped by molten glass, no two are exactly alike. Slight differences in colour, bubbles and grain are part of each piece's character.
