Candle Sand

Candle sand turns any heat-resistant vessel into a candle in under a minute. Pour the fine wax pearls, nestle in a cotton wick, light it, and the sand melts in a neat pool around the flame. Once cool, lift out the hardened wax ring, smooth the surface and it is ready to go again. No jars to throw away, no half-burnt pillars: just candlelight, shaped however you like it.

The range runs to eleven colours. Ten are fragranced, each inspired by a well-known perfume, from the amber warmth of Baccarat Rouge 540 to the smoky fruit of Creed Aventus, and one is a clean, unfragranced white for dinner tables and scent-free rooms. Every 300g resealable pouch includes four cotton wicks and gives up to 60 hours of total burn time, and all of it is made in England.

Also called sand candles or wax sand

Candle sand goes by a few names. Sand candles, wax sand, sand wax and searches like sand for candle holders all point at the same thing: granulated wax you pour into a vessel and light. There is no ordinary sand in it at all. It is wax the whole way through, milled fine enough to pour and level like sand, which is why it burns as a candle rather than simply propping a tea light upright.

How to use candle sand

Choose a stable, heat-resistant, non-flammable container: glass, ceramic and metal all work, and our recycled glass candle holders were practically made for it. Pour the sand to a depth of a few centimetres, stand a wick upright in the centre with its base buried, and light. To refresh, wait for the wax to cool, lift out the hardened ring around the spent wick, level the surface and place a new wick. Layer two or three colours in one vessel for a striped design, or run a single shade across several small vessels down a table.

How do sand candles work?

Pour the wax pearls into a heat-resistant container, stand a cotton wick in the middle and light it. Only the sand touching the flame melts, so a small pool forms at the surface while the rest stays loose. Once it cools, lift out the hardened disc, level the surface and add a fresh wick.

What sand do you put in a candle holder?

Candle sand, not decorative sand. Decorative sand only holds a tea light upright, whereas candle sand is the fuel itself. Three to five centimetres is plenty in most holders. If you need the holder as well, start with our recycled glass candle holders.

How long does a pouch last?

Up to 60 hours of total burn time per 300g pouch, spread across as many evenings as you like, because only the wax immediately around the wick ever melts.

What is candle sand made of?

Stearin wax, milled into fine pearls and made in England. Fragranced varieties carry the scent in the wax itself; the unfragranced white is plain wax with nothing added. Every pouch includes four cotton wicks.
