What a decanter actually does (and does not do)
Let us start with the honest part: unlike wine, whisky does not need to breathe. Wine is decanted to soften tannins and separate sediment. Whisky, at 40 percent or more, is stable. Poured into a decanter for the evening, it will taste the same as it did in the bottle.
So a whisky decanter is not about chemistry. It is about ritual and presence. It turns an ordinary pour into a small occasion, brings your whisky to the table in better clothes than the bottle, and gives your favourite spirit a moment that looks the part. That is the test to buy by: choose the decanter you want to look at, not the one promising to transform the dram.
Glass, crystal or recycled glass
Traditional cut crystal is the classic look, but it comes with a caveat worth knowing: older and cheaper crystal often contains lead, and most advice suggests not storing spirits in lead crystal for long periods. Modern lead-free crystal solves that at a price.
Plain glass is inexpensive, but mass-produced decanters can feel anonymous. The third road is handmade recycled glass. Our decanters and glassware are hand-blown from recycled glass, then fused over reclaimed Balinese gamal wood, gathered from fallen pieces. The wood base means it never needs a coaster, and because the molten glass settles into the timber by hand, no two decanters are quite alike. Size: how much whisky do you actually decant?
Most bottles are 70cl, but you rarely need to decant the whole bottle. A 500ml decanter, like the one in our whisky set with matching tumbler, holds most of a bottle, plenty for a long evening with friends. Smaller 20cm to 24cm decanters suit the occasional dram or a second spirit, and double nicely as water carafes at dinner. If you usually pour for one or two, smaller is more practical: decant just what you will drink that night.
Stopper or open neck
A stopper keeps dust out and slows evaporation while the decanter sits out through a long evening. Our duck decanter comes with a matching glass stopper. If you decant only for an hour or two, an open neck is no problem at all, and easier to pour from mid-conversation.
Shape, weight and the pour
Wide-bodied decanters are stable and show off the colour of the spirit; tall slim ones take less shelf space. Hand-blown decanters sit somewhere personal in between, because the glass finds its own settle over the wood. Pick up the bottle you own most often and check the decanter's capacity against it, and if you are buying as a gift, wide and low is the safest, most impressive shape on a drinks trolley.
Looking after it
