When the evenings draw in, scent does a lot of the work of making a room feel warm. Bright, fresh fragrances that suit a summer kitchen can feel thin in November, while spiced, woody and resinous notes fill a room the way a fire does. Here are the crystal wax melt blends we reach for in autumn and at Christmas, which ones pair well, and an easy gift set. Prices were correct when we published this guide, and each product page always shows the current price.

The short answer

For autumn and Christmas, choose warm, spiced and woody scents: Carnelian Fire (spiced orange), Tigereye Strength (vanilla sandalwood), Emerald Forest (an earthy deep forest blend) and Obsidian Shield (resinous Dragon's Blood). Each 50g bar is £3.50, with 10% off automatically when you buy three or more.

Carnelian Fire: spiced orange

If one scent says Christmas, it is orange and spice. Carnelian Fire is warm citrus with a gentle spice kick, made for autumn and the run-up to Christmas. It suits the kitchen on a baking afternoon and the hallway when guests arrive, and real Carnelian chips appear in the pool as it melts.

Tigereye Strength: vanilla sandalwood

Tigereye Strength is smooth vanilla with soft, woody sandalwood: steady, warm and comforting rather than sweet. It is the one for the living room on a dark evening, with a blanket and a film.

Emerald Forest: a walk in the woods

Emerald Forest is an earthy deep forest blend with grounding, woody notes, set with real Aventurine. It brings the feel of a winter walk indoors, and it sits well alongside fresh greenery on the mantelpiece.

Obsidian Shield: Dragon's Blood

Obsidian Shield is the statement melt: bold, resinous Dragon's Blood with warm, smoky-sweet notes that build as it melts. It is strong, so one cube is plenty in most rooms, and it is happiest on its own rather than mixed. The deep plum bar is set with real Black Obsidian chips.

Lapis Night: for long evenings

If you prefer florals, Lapis Night is smooth midnight jasmine, soft notes that deepen as the light goes. It suits the long, dark evenings of December without feeling heavy.

Something lighter for bright mornings

Not every winter day calls for spice. Golden Glow is zesty fresh citrus for a bright kitchen, and Aquamarine Wave is clean coastal moss, fresh and airy for a bathroom. Both make a good break from the richer blends.

Pairing two scents

Two blends from the same family can share a dish. Start with a clean dish so you know exactly what you are mixing, and use one cube of each.

  • Carnelian Fire with Tigereye Strength: orange and vanilla, the warmest pairing of all.
  • Emerald Forest with Tigereye Strength: woody on woody, calm and grounding.
  • Carnelian Fire with Golden Glow: two citruses, one spiced and one fresh.
  • Obsidian Shield: keep it on its own; it is strong enough to drown out a partner.

A gift set for under £20

A pebble wax burner with three wax melt bars makes a complete gift that is ready to use. Our pebble wax burners are £6.95 in speckled off-white or matt black, and three melts trigger the automatic 10% off, so the set comes to £16.40. You can add the starter set in one click from any burner or wax melt page, or from our Christmas gift edit. Single bars at £3.50 also make easy stocking fillers.

Getting the most from the scent

  • Use one cube in a small room and two in a larger one; add more only if the scent stays light.
  • Warm the wax a little before guests arrive, so the room smells welcoming as the door opens.
  • When you can no longer smell it while it is melted, the fragrance is spent: let it set, lift it out and keep the gemstone chips.
  • Our guide to cleaning a wax melt burner shows how to change scents cleanly.

Using them safely

Stand the burner on a stable, heat-resistant surface, away from curtains, books, garlands and anything that can catch fire. Never leave a lit tealight unattended, keep burners out of reach of children and pets, and never add water to hot wax. Our crystal wax melts also work in an electric warmer if you would rather have no flame.

Common questions

What wax melt scents are best for Christmas?

Warm, spiced and woody scents: spiced orange, vanilla sandalwood, forest blends and resinous Dragon's Blood. Our Carnelian Fire, Tigereye Strength, Emerald Forest and Obsidian Shield cover all four.

What are the best autumn wax melt scents?

Spiced citrus and soft woods suit early autumn, then richer, resinous scents as the nights get longer. Carnelian Fire and Tigereye Strength are a good place to start.

Can you mix wax melt scents?

Yes, if they share a family, such as two warm scents or two woody ones. Start with a clean dish and one cube of each, and keep very strong blends like Obsidian Shield on their own.

Do wax melts make good stocking fillers?

Yes. A 50g bar is £3.50, it fits in a stocking, and each one has real gemstone chips to keep once the scent has gone.
